R4 races through new venue for year 32

MONTICELLO — The Rhulen Rock Hill Run & Ramble added to its storied legacy on Saturday morning as competitors gathered at a new venue to compete in one of the pillar 5k races in Sullivan County.

Holiday Mountain Ski & Fun Park, which was recently purchased and reopened by Mike Taylor, was selected as the venue for this year’s R4. The fast, flat out-and-back course provided a great opportunity for runners to attempt a PR time.

“We’re very excited about everything happening here at Holiday,” Suzy Loughlin said about the venue change. “We’re grateful to the Center for Discovery for allowing us to run there for so many years.”

The new venue offered the opportunity to explore the new space, which included using the South Lodge for registration, and the area outside the South Lodge for food, informational tables and live music.

“I really liked the venue change,” said Skylar Musa, the first overall woman to cross the finish line and fourth overall finisher. “Suzy does a great job. She puts a lot of effort into the event each year.”

The starting line for the race was situated at the lower parking lot, and the route had runners racing down the road alongside the river. The top-5 runners each posted a sub-18 minute time, with the winner, Vann Moffett, finishing in 15:07 with a pace of 4:51 minutes per mile.

Along with the increased pace of many competitors, the race also saw an increase in runners this year, with nearly 900 registered for the in-person and virtual race combined.

“I love seeing all the people, both new and returning every year,” Loughlin added.

The race also drew a large crowd of volunteer firefighters, with many competing in the Sullivan 180 Healthiest Fire Department Challenge.

There was a special award for the first firefighter to cross the finish line, which went to Rock Hill Fire Department’s Owen Bassett.

“The new venue was great,” Musa added. “Everything had its own spot, the organizers did a great job and it’s always a fun race.”
