Riverside shul razed by fire

WOODBOURNE  — Firefighters raced to the scene of a structure fire at 389 Riverside Drive in Woodbourne – site of the former Regal Hotel and current home to Kossoner Shul.

According to Sullivan County Fire Coordinator John Hauschild, Woodbourne Fire Department was the main department at the scene, who were toned out around 1 a.m.

At the time of the blaze, the camp was closed but a few people were on site, however they evacuated out of the building on arrival of the Woodbourne Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

According to Hauschild, the building “was a total loss.”

The intensity of the blaze was also said to have caused a collapse of the building, according to published reports. The Sifrei Torah was also stated to have been saved from the building in time.

Assisting at the scene were the Fire Departments of Grahamsville, Hurleyville, Kauneonga Lake, Liberty, Loch Sheldrake, Fallsburg, Swan Lake and Woodridge. The Town of Thompson Fast Team, which consisted of Rock Hill and Monticello were also at the scene to assist.

Woodbourne EMS and Hatzolah EMS were also at the scene to provide assistance.

On standby were Livingston Manor, White Sulphur Springs, Wurtsboro, Neversink fire departments, as well as Port Jervis out of Orange County.

Also offering assistance were New York State Police, Town of Fallsburg Police, the Town of Fallsburg Water Department, the Town of Fallsburg Code Enforcement, Town of Fallsburg Highway Department, New York State Electric and Gas and the Sullivan County Bureau of Fire Investigators.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by authorities.
