In a solemn ceremony at the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery on Route 55, the Town of Neversink held their semi-annual Flag Exchange on Friday in honor of area Veterans.

This Veterans Day tribute saw the lowering of the flag honoring 10-year U.S. Navy Veteran Elton Hynson, and the raising of a flag in recognition of U.S. Navy Veteran Charles Sosnowski.

Following an invocation by Deacon Carmine Salvemini of Immaculate Conception Church in Woodbourne, the Hynson family led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a poem read by Grahamsville resident, Vietnam Veteran and Purple Heart recipient James Richardson.

Grahamsville resident and Navy Veteran Kenneth Sosnowski then spoke a few words about his father, Charles, who joined the Navy and became a machinist assigned to the USS O’Brien (DD-415), a World War II-era Sims-class destroyer, and later served on the USS Bennett (DD 473).

The Flag Exchange was organized by Geri Gorton, area resident and Zoning Board of Appeals Clerk for the Town of Neversink. Also taking part was Boy Scout Troop 97, members of which lowered and raised the flags, Girl Scout Troop 314, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department, and many area Veterans and residents.

Following Deacon Salvemini’s benediction, brothers Jonathan and Tyler Conjura performed Echo Taps to end the ceremony.
