Shining a light on Tri-Valley

As an alumnus, retired employee and a taxpayer, I feel an obligation to shine a light on what is happening at Tri-Valley Central School.

Recently, Superintendent Erin Long recommended and entered into a professional services agreement for her spouse as Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics that pays him $60/hour, and the board, with full knowledge of the relationship, approved the agreement. The agreement was not made available on the public portion of the board agenda, the relationship was not disclosed publicly and another teacher is performing the duties of Athletic Director. I believe that this is unethical.

The Superintendent also arranged for an administrative retreat at the Mirbeau Inn and Spa in Rhinebeck at a cost of $8,000 to the taxpayers. Once again, she had the approval of the Board of Education. I do not think that this is an appropriate use of school district funds. Where are the checks and balances? Meanwhile, two years in a row, members of the board have balked at paying for bilingual evaluations for students who may need supports in the classroom. Shouldn’t the board prioritize students’ academic needs?

Fiscal oversight and ensuring the Superintendent follows laws and policies are the responsibility of the Board of Education. I encourage all community members to attend board meetings and contact board members to become informed before our school district is completely compromised.
