Sondra Bauernfeind, a longtime resident of Mongaup Valley, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 6, 2021 at Garnet Health Medical Center - Catskills. She was 85 years old. The daughter of the late Dr. Max and Rose Epstein, Sondra was born on March 13, 1936, in Brooklyn, NY and lived most of her life in Sullivan County.

Mrs. Bauernfeind attended Jeffersonville Central High School and was a graduate of New Paltz State Teachers College. She taught high school for 26 years, most recently as a science teacher at Liberty High School where she was also an advisor to some of the school’s extra-curricular activities. She was Chairwoman of the Sullivan County Conservative Party and Founder of Victims Against Medical Abuse. With her love for animals and nature, she was a member of the National Audubon Society and N.Y. Kennel Club, raising champion lhasa apsos for many years.  She was also actively involved in numerous political, social, and environmental causes.

She is predeceased by her beloved husband John Bauernfeind, brother Jacob and his wife Rhoda Epstein, and sister Carol Epstein. She is survived by her brother’s children Russell and his wife Susan Epstein; Cynthia Epstein; Aaron and his wife Kari Epstein; Ilene and her husband Michael Schlank; and Sheryl and her husband Dan Gordon.

A graveside funeral service took place on Monday, August 9, 2021 at 1:00pm at the Bauernfeind Cemetery, Bauernfeind Rd, Callicoon, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 31, White Lake, NY 12786.
