SULLIVAN COUNTY — Sullivan County led job market growth of non-farm jobs in December 2024, according to the New York State Department of Labor’s report issued on January 23. The county exhibited 3.9 percent growth in the final month of last year, just ahead of Cortland County, which saw a growth of 3.7 percent.
Schuyler County ranked third with 2.1 percent growth, and Steuben County ranked last in the state, with a growth of (-1.4 percent).
Loreen J. Gebelein, the director of Sullivan County’s Center for Workforce Development, said that Sullivan County led the state in 2024 with an overall private sector growth rate of 5.7 percent. Gebelein said, “this means the economy is good and Sullivan County is [financially] sustainable. Demand for labor is high, businesses are in major demand, and unemployment is low [3 percent in November 2024; down from 3.6 percent in November 2023].” Gebelein concluded that, “the economy is expanding, jobs are being created, and Sullivan County is thriving.”
The Department of Labor reported that the Sullivan County industries that grew the most over the last fiscal year were leisure and hospitality (+11.1 percent), banks (+11.1 percent), and professional and business services (+9.1 percent); the industries with the least growth were trades, transportation, and utilities (+2.2 percent), government (+1.7 percent), and information (+0.0 percent).
Across the Hudson Valley Region, the largest gains over the last 12 months were in private education and health services (+8200), other services (+3800), leisure and hospitality (+2400) and financial activities (+800). Loss of jobs occurred in mining, logging, and construction (-1,900), professional and business services (-1700), trade, transportation and utilities (-1,500) and information (-500).
