GOSHEN–– Coach Fred was an amazing man who dedicated his life to his family, friends, and students; a remarkable person worthy of all the praise and admiration we could say or write. Fred embodied the qualities of humility, kindness, and sportsmanship. He has never taken credit for any accomplishment and always shared the moment with others.
The BCANY all star game is a game held annually in Goshen that brings together 48 of the sections best talent both locally and across the bridge. The game is sponsored by the Section not only to give our players a chance to show their talent in front of loved ones and college coaches but most importantly for our Sullivan resident players to go out and raise money for our beloved Coach Fred Ahart.
This year Sullivan county was set to be represented by six athletes from three different schools alongside Coach Chris Russo, head coach of the Monticello Panthers varsity basketball team. Those athletes are forwards, Quentin Liciaga and Javien Williams both juniors who represented the Monticello Panthers in the Junior-Varsity game and senior, Jayden Berrios-Cuevas represented the Panthers in the Varsity game.
Livingston Manor was represented in the Junior-Varsity game by sophomore guard Ben Johnston and Eldred had two players on the roster as well but due to football injuries this past week they unfortunately were unable to play. Those players were junior , James Deyermond a forward and sophomore guard Trai Kaufmann.
I had a chance to speak with Coach Russo between games and he had nothing but great things to say about the athletes, the game and the meaning behind the foundation we were all there to support.
“This is one of my favorite events. We have players and coaches from across the Section involved in a friendly but competitive environment. I am so happy that we have the opportunity to do this - bring together some of the best players in the area and giving them the chance to be seen by college coaches. It is a great day for our oganization, coaches and players.
I would like to thank the Hoops Showcase Committee, Mr. George St.Lawrence and the Goshen school district, as well as the Fred Ahart foundation, Lynn Fern, and Yovanni Fields for their help, support, and promotion of the event and our players.”
