Sullivan West defeats Livingston Manor on Wildcats’ home court

LIVINGSTON MANOR –– It was a frigid December night last Friday in Livingston Manor when the Lady Wildcats hosted the Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs for a girls basketball regular season game. Sullivan West was able to clench  a 38-10 win over Manor. Coach Pat Donovan commented after their win, “It was a tale of two halves, we played much better the second half than the first. It was our first game so we had to get some nerves out. Manor is going to be a good team, Coach Clarke is doing an excellent job with them. We’re looking to be competitive in a tough division, and I think we’ve got a good chance at doing that.”

Sullivan West showed their  dominance from the start forcing multiple Manor turnovers with their defense. Both teams struggled to find the basket early on until Sullivan West grabbed the first bucket.

Manor started a full court press after the Lady Bulldogs first basket. However, the aggressive defense on both ends of the court did come with a cost as both teams picked up 3 early fouls. The slower paced opening quarter ended with Sullivan West up 7-1 over Manor.

Ella Herbert of Sullivan West used a seal of dribble in the paint for an easy layup. To start off the second quarter The Lady Wildcats were getting many attempts at each possession with multiple offensive rebounds but couldn’t find the net. Then Leah Ladenhauf of Livingston Manor hit a deep three to make it a 5 point game. A clutch drive from Anastasia Niforatos brings Manor to within one basket behind Sullivan West with three minutes left before the half. But the Lady Bulldogs responded by cashing two deep 3-pointers to put them up 15-7 over Manor. Sullivan West’s Mckala Chevalier scored on an and-1 off a pick and roll to send the game into the half.

Sullivan West forced multiple turnovers in the third quarter and was able to hold Manor to just one point in the quarter. The LadyBulldogs’ Ella Herbert played an integral role in widening their lead with multiple drives and threes.

Sullivan West was the first to score in the final quarter with a slick inside pass to Brooke Nunnari for an easy layup. Ella Herbert was also able to score back to back buckets in the paint. The Lady Bulldogs’ defense was again able to keep Manor from scoring for the entire quarter and this combined with their inside passing propelled them to a 38-10 victory over Livingston Manor.

After the loss Manor Coach Joe Clarke said, “Sullivan West is a good team so it was tough. Once we get into a situation where we aren’t scoring for a while it gets tough for them. We’ve got some time before our next game so hopefully we come out of Christmas break with a little more fire.”
