SUNY Sullivan Theater Program presents multiple shows

LOCH SHELDRAKE — The SUNY Sullivan Theater Program is proud to announce performances for Lope de Vega’s Fuenteovejuna/The Sheep Well, a revolutionary classical Spanish play adapted and directed by Jessica López-Barkl, and Jack Sibblies Drury’s Fairview, a 2019 Pulitzer Prize-winning piece directed by Nick López.

The 2023-2024 Theater season explores the theme of identity, with each play delving deep into the difficult choices characters make as they begin to determine who they truly are. Fairview adheres to this theme.

Fairview is a searing examination of families, drama, family dramas, and the insidiousness of white supremacy. Winner of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize which The New York Times called “…dazzling and ruthless…one of the most exquisitely and systematically arranged ambushes of an unsuspecting audience in years…Fairview is a series of perspective-altering surprises.”

Fairview will be performed in the Seelig Theater, on Friday, April 26 at 8 p.m.; Sunday, April 28 at 2 p.m.; Thursday, May 2, and Saturday, May 4 at 8 p.m.

The great Spanish author Lope de Vega (1562–1635) wrote Fuenteovejuna/The Sheep Well in 1612 after he was inspired by a historical incident: farmers and peasants of the village of Fuente Ovejuna rose up against a military commander and his soldiers who routinely brutalized and oppressed them.

Fuenteovejuna/The Sheep Well will be performed outdoors at the SUNY Sullivan Labyrinth on April 27, May 1, 3 at 6 p.m., and May 5 at 2 p.m.

All performances will take place at the college, 112 College Rd., Loch Sheldrake, NY, 12759.

Tickets are a suggested donation of $10 to the SUNY Sullivan Theater Program/Performing Arts Club. For more information, contact Jessica López-Barkl at jbarkl@sunysullivan.edu.
