This March once again welcomes Women’s History Month – a time to reflect on the countless contributions women have given to the world, both seen and unseen. Thankfully, we as a collective have documentation and historical reports of the heavy-handed work done by women of all creeds, races and religions, but there is a great amount that was left unwritten.

This is why this month is so important, as its mission is to properly recognize what was done by women in the interest of furthering humanity. It is also hugely important to history in the making today! Here in Sullivan County, there are so many strong, intelligent and courageous women that lead the charge on so many fronts of their workplaces and in their homes – traits that are inherited from a lineage of rising through challenges and finding success.

Our hats are off to those women who make it work. To those who write their own history. To those who don’t take just what the world gives them, but makes the world better by using their skills, talents and curiosity to lift all that is around them to a higher standard. Womanhood is a superpower that is used rightfully for others and themselves – and although the world is grateful for their spirit, none are entitled to the feminine power except those who wield it themselves.

March 8 also saw International Women’s Day (IWD), which sponsored the theme “inspire inclusion.” The important holiday stretches all the way back to 1911. For more information on IWD, visit www.internationalwomensday.com.

As March continues, please look out for future editions of the Sullivan County Democrat that highlight the work and lives of women linked to the county, a number of which can be found in our upcoming Young Professionals special section which showcases young women who give their all year-round to elevate all that surrounds them. Those featured women, as well as those who remain unsung heroes, are creating the building blocks for a women-inclusive and women-driven society.
