Town of Callicoon Repairs Culvert after Washout

CALLICOON – On Wednesday, July 29, Highway Superintendent Ryan Bose and his crew went out to assess the damage of the previous day’s deluge and discovered a washout on Bayer Road that had partially destroyed a culvert that needed to be rebuilt.

“We found that we had a big washout on the end of Bayer Road,” said Bose at the Callicoon Town meeting on August 10. “We took out 600 tons of material and packed in the washout as well as about 3.5 loads of big stackable stones and built a new end wall on the pipe.”

Bose said there were also some washouts on Kinney Road that required the highway department to clear gravel from the road and replace some of the displaced earth. Though it rained again on Friday, July 31, the rebuild had held up against the second storm and only required the crew to complete minor road clean-ups.

“We had a few trees down with that storm,” continued Bose. “We had another [damaged] pipe that’s next to that one on Bayer Road [on Buck Brook Road].”

Bose said Fremont Town Supervisor and District Manager for Sullivan County Soil and Water Conservation Brian Brustman looked at the pipe and had promised to get back to him with an assessment soon.

Bose said that where two 20-foot pipes joined there was a 10-foot diameter pipe that had begun to erode from water running underneath it, possibly because of the pipe being raised by a tree or rock.

“So we’re going to try and figure out if we can do something with it or possibly we’re going to have to take that pipe out and replace it,” reflected Bose.

Town Supervisor Tom Bose said, “I think we were pretty lucky with that storm, Fremont just up the road got hit probably harder than we did.”
