Town of Delaware finalizes dates for shredding, Spring clean up & litter sweep

HORTONVILLE  — The Town of Delaware, in partnership with Jeff Bank, announced that its Community Shred Day would be held on Saturday, April 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Callicoon Creek Park (the date was changed but then reverted back to the original date). The Spring Cleanup for Town of Delaware residents will also be held on Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The announcements were made during its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 9.

Building Inspector Kristopher Scullion said he was busy with new home construction after the recent completion of a home in Kenoza Lake Estates and a new home was started near the Stone Arch Bridge. Scullion, who just completed his training for the year, said the new building code books will be released next year.

“We’re waiting on the new code books to come out…there is supposed to be a whole new set of regulations [and] the biggest changes will be in the energy code,” Scullion said, noting the new book will reflect much stricter energy codes.

Town Clerk Tess McBeath reported that, due to heavy rains forecasted for this weekend, the Upper Delaware Litter Sweep will be pushed to Saturday, April 19. McBeath said she will provide supplies for volunteers - vests, grabbers, trash bags and coupons for free dumping at the transfer station - and urged local residents to participate.

Bill Brown from Delaware Engineering said “the masons mobilized last week and started laying [concrete blocks] on our new wellhouse. The snow this week slowed that down a little bit, but I think we’ll be done with the block next week, then we’ll put a roof on it and start fitting out the inside. Once the Asphalt plants open up here in the next week we should start a water line installation …on 17B just past Roche’s [Garage].”

Brown also described another project – expanding the court facilities – at the Delaware Youth Center to accommodate pickleball, and announced that Northeast Paving and Sealcoating of Ellenville was the lowest bidder for the project.

“The grant money is in hand from Sullivan 180, which will cover the bulk of the cost,” Brown said. He anticipated the completion of the pickleball court by this Summer.
