Since 1934 the Callicoon Center Band has brought the sound of sweet music to concert attendees. Their 88th summer season kicks off on July 6 and concerts will take place each Wednesday through August 24 at 8 p.m. (rain or shine) at the Barn at Callicoon Hills.
The Democrat stopped by the Callicoon Center Band’s last rehearsal of 2022 on Wednesday evening at Sullivan West Elementary School.
Conductor Jim Newton said the volunteer band has added four new musicians this year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a shortened season, few rehearsals were had last summer.
With a full eight concerts planned this summer and the ability to have more frequent rehearsals in preparation, Newton said he and the band are, “Looking forward to playing some of the more difficult tunes.”
Callicoon Center Band President Chuck Sommer told the Democrat that they’re trying to get back to “Something like normal,” and playing “traditional town band music ... with a lot of marches, polkas, waltzs, foxtrots, etc.”
Sommer added, “We’ve played this type of music for a long time.”
