Turtle Trot 10K and 5K tears through Kenoza Lake

JEFFERSONVILLE — Runners, walkers, supporters and even goats gathered at the Kenoza Lake Fire Department in the early morning hours on Saturday to run through the hilly terrain for the 10th annual Turtle Trot.

The 10K race was a large, challenging loop along the road that featured both uphill and downhill sections. The 5K also featured a hilly terrain on the out-and-back course.

To kick off the event, youngsters had the opportunity to compete in a quarter-mile fun run, finishing up in front of an excited crowd ready to embark on races of their own.

The 10K set off first, taking off from their starting line at 8 a.m. as the 5K runners made their way to the starting line on the opposite side of the firehouse.

New York Senator Peter Oberacker welcomed the 5K runners at the starting line, and after some words from event organizer April Rutledge, sent the runners out on the course.

Daniel Rush was the first 5K runner to cross the finish line. It was the second year in a row that Rush has won the race after a second-place finish in 2022.

Thomas Houghtaling, who took first in 2022, was the second to cross the finish line.

Laura Griffin finished third, just seconds ahead of Moe Byrne as the first two ladies to pass under the arches.

Jordan Snyder was the first across the finish line for the 10K race, completing the course in 39:08.0.

Weronika Gazda was the first female to cross the finish line in the 10K, just 0.7 seconds faster than Erica Tricarico in 50:41.0 and 50:41.7.
