KENOZA LAKE — One of the more challenging races that Sullivan County has to offer is back this weekend and celebrating a milestone 10th year this Saturday.

The Turtle Trot has grown tremendously throughout its first decade, and they are looking to eclipse the 100-runner mark for the second time this year.

April Rutledge, who organizes the event alongside her family, has been running since middle school. The race was started as a memorial for her father and cousin, and raises money for local families that incur health-related costs, such as transportation.

“It’s nice to see everyone get together for a good cause,” April explained. “Seeing returning runners and new ones is always one of the best parts of the day.”

The course, which features both a 10K and 5K race, were roads that April has trained on since she began her running journey.

“It’s not an easy course,” Rutledge said, “but it’s a very fun race.”

Speaking of fun, for the 10th anniversary of the event they are including a quarter mile fun run for kids. The free youth race will kick off at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday before the 10K starts at 8. The 5K will follow with a starting time of 8:15.

If you have yet to register but are interested in the race, it isn’t too late. You can register the morning of at the Kenoza Lake Fire Department, which is centrally located to the starting lines for both the 10K and 5K courses.
