Using competition to make fitness more fun

Let me set the stage for you: I’m sitting at my kitchen island on a Sunday afternoon watching both men’s and women’s March Madness basketball games while writing new workouts for my membership program, Move with Maggi - Lift at the Gym. I typically write a new program every twelve weeks, and I knew I wanted this next program that runs from now until June to include three days of strength training and at least two days of running per week, as my women’s league soccer and softball seasons are starting soon.

My clients get access to the exact workouts that I write for myself through Move with Maggi. It is for the person who wants to get stronger and feel like an athlete again and this particular version, Lift at the Gym, is for people who want to do that while working out at the gym with access to a variety of equipment.

As I was sitting there watching and writing, I had a seemingly crazy idea pop into my head. What if I trained for another half marathon right now? I ran my first half marathon in 2016 and finished in 2:00:38. My goal was to finish it in under two hours, and I barely missed it! I figured, if I’m going to be doing all of this running anyway to prepare for my sports seasons, I may as well culminate it with a race.

I began searching for half marathons in New York at the end of this next training cycle and came across one in the perfect place at the right time. It felt meant to be. I pitched the idea of training for a half marathon to my husband and he excitedly agreed. The decision was made at that moment, I wrote the program accordingly, and we signed up for the race.

Now I know it’s not common for people to make decisions that quickly, and you may be thinking I’m a little bit crazy. That’s okay. There are a few reasons why it makes perfect sense to me. The first one is that I already feel much more excited for my training, especially the running part, now that I have a performance goal attached to it that is specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, and has a time frame. Just training for an upcoming sports season doesn’t guarantee I’ll complete all of my workouts to the best of my ability or be as consistent as I’d like to be, but being signed up for a race that is much more challenging than what I’m capable of at the moment does.

You see, I love to win, and once I’m committed to a competition, even with myself, there is nothing that will get in my way. That is the second reason why signing up for this race is the best step for this time in my life and my training. I have the time, physical ability, and desire to take on a new challenge. Challenging ourselves through competition doesn’t need to end when we step off the sports field for the last time in high school or college. Continuing to compete with yourself and others makes the training experience much more enjoyable and rewarding.

If you’re looking for a new training program where you can get stronger, channel your inner athlete again, and even train for a half marathon right now, then Move with Maggi may be for you!
