Volunteers help restore Roscoe dog park after flood damage

ROSCOE — Volunteers gathered Sunday, August 2, to help restore the Roscoe dog park after flooding from the Willowemoc damaged the property during the July 29 storm.

Town of Rockland Councilperson Christine Routledge organized the effort to make the park usable again while the town waits for professional repairs to the fencing.

Routledge said the volunteer effort brought the park about 80 percent of the way back before rain ended the work for the day.

The flooding knocked down large sections of chain-link fencing, damaged posts and left debris across the property. Muddy floodwater covered the park during the storm, and long stretches of fencing were left lying flat across the grass afterward.

Volunteers cleared debris, worked on damaged fencing and cleaned up the grounds.

Several local businesses donated equipment, gasoline, tools and manpower to the effort, including Buchholz Landscaping, Northern Outdoor Services and KMAH Services.

Volunteers included Brian Buchholz, Cliff O’Dell, Phil Eggleton, Shelley Eggleton, Laurie Allen-Kuehn, Calley Erlwein, Morgan Buchholz, Eric Schwartz, Kaci Schwartz, Dylan Neuhaus, Josh and Tasha O’Dell, as well as Kevin Holt and his boys, Mason and Kayden Holt.

Some repairs remain. The divider separating the large- and small-dog areas has not yet been reinstalled, and Routledge cautioned that there are still spots where smaller dogs could squeeze through the fencing.

The town is waiting for a repair or replacement estimate from Oneonta Fencing, which installed the original fence.

Routledge also plans to hold a fundraiser to help pay for the professional repairs.

Until that work is completed, visitors are being asked to use caution when bringing dogs to the park.
