A number of Sullivan, Ulster, Delaware, and Orange County emergency response agencies responded to a two-day brush fire located in the Wurtsboro Fire District on August 27 and 28.

On Saturday, first responders were called out around 11:30 am for sightings of smoke, and at around 12:40 pm the fire was located.

According to Sullivan County Fire Coordinator John Hauschild, the fire occured near Primrose Brook Ridge and ultimately impacted around 50 to 55 acres.

Joining the 23 Sullivan County Fire Departments on Saturday were 12 Orange County fire departments, and five Ulster County fire departments.

Also at the scene were New York State Forest Rangers, New York State Police, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, Mamakating First Aid Squad, Rock Hill Ambulance and Mobilemedic EMS, the respective Sullivan, Orange, and Ulster County Bureaus of Fire, Sullivan County Division of Public Safety, the 911 Coordinator and EMS Coordinator, and the Wurtsboro Fire Department Auxiliary.

On Sunday, 18 total fire departments were present, 16 being from Sullivan County, one from Orange County, and one from Delaware County.

Those agencies were joined by JML Quarry Inc. and Brian D. Elman Excavation who assisted with bulldozers at the scene.

The basecamp for the first responders was set up at 241 County Rd. 56, Wurtsboro.

No injuries were reported on Saturday or Sunday.

“The coordination that the fire chiefs had was great…It was a big community effort… shout out to all the first responders no matter what agency, they did a great job,” Hauschild said.

Hauschild noted the community showed their support for the firefighters and workers at the scene with donations of water and food.

The fire was contained and a fire line was established. The cause of the brush fire is yet to be determined. Forest Rangers are set to continue to monitor the scene.
