Yellowjackets knock Wildcats out of postseason contention

LIVINGSTON MANOR – Sometimes things go the way you want, and sometimes they just do not.

For the Lady Wildcats, who started their season hot, were bit by the injury bug and have struggled mightily to score in the middle chunk of the season.

The Livingston Manor/Roscoe Lady Wildcats hosted the Eldred Yellowjackets on Thursday night for their homecoming game, but it was Eldred who celebrated the end of the evening after winning 1-0.

The first matchup between these two teams was a double overtime shootout that saw the teams combine for nine total goals, but Thursday night was a different story.

The lone goal scored in the game, by Avery Moscatiello, was netted 25 minutes into the first half.

From there, the two teams exchanged advances up the field, and a few shots on goal, all of which came up empty.

Athena Niforatos shot a penalty kick for the Lady Wildcats in the second half, but it was batted away by Eldred’s goalie, Grace Loretto, and the follow up shot ricocheted out of bounds.

The girls battled until the final whistle, with the Lady Wildcats pushing the pace in the second half knowing that a playoff berth was on the line if they could pull off the win.

Nick Wyss, Coach of the Lady Wildcats said, “We played well even though we were missing four starters and a fifth got hurt during the game. We have a young team, there’s a lot for us to work on, but we hung in and had our most hard fought game of the year against a healthy Eldred team.”

First year Lady Yellowjackets coach Sami Clemmons said, “I think our first half today was the best we’ve played all year. We moved the ball and played as a team. In the second half we reverted back to playing individually, and Manor fought hard through injuries. They didn’t make it easy for us.”

With Chapel Field not having a varsity girls team this year, Eldred finished a perfect 2-0 in division contests, while Livingston Manor finished 0-2.

Both teams still have some regular season games to look forward to, but only Eldred will be moving on to the postseason this year.
