To the editor:
Judging from your editorial of December 2, it seems that “ageism” is one of the few remaining socially acceptable forms of bigotry.
A strange kind of bigotry, too. If we’re lucky, we will all become “old,” although what is the definition of “old”?
Are you old at 50? 60? 70? 80? Maybe you’re old when you become hidebound and rigid and lose your sense of awe, curiosity and fairness. By that standard, I’ve known “old” 30-year-olds.
Concerned about civil rights? The environment? Perhaps your editorial writer is too young to remember that the Baby Boomers were in the forefront of both movements in the 60’s; yes, we were young at the time, but many of us still retain an interest in justice and a livable planet.
By all means, encourage younger people to enter politics – those who have something to offer the country. It’s not the age that’s important, it’s the attitude. In the meantime, if you’re really concerned about the government reflecting the governed, how about writing an editorial about all the women (not) in positions of power?
