T-V boys and girls are Class D champs; track and field heroics abound in Class B, C and D

RONDOUT VALLEY and GOSHEN – “Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out,” noted Screen Actors Guild winner Robert James Collier.

Track athletes train assiduously, repeatedly building their strength and developing the skills that their events require. That leads to personal bests that culminate for most runners, jumpers and throwers at the Section IX track and field championships where they hope for individual honors and to add to their teams aggregate scores.

For the Tri-Valley boys and girls, the season-long effort resulted in the Section IX Class D championships. It was the boys seventh consecutive title. The girls reclaimed the crown from defending champion Sullivan West.

Assistant coach Skylar Musa, a Tri-Valley grad standout, had been coaching the girls at Sullivan West last year and her passion, recruiting efforts and mentoring led the Bulldogs to the zenith. This year she returned home and along with her husband Tyler Eckhoff and the inimitable guidance of head coach Chip Furman, they collectively reforged the gold.

Over the course of two days this past week, the Class C/D meet, and the Class A/B meets were staged, Each class had its share of Sullivan County notables. There were gold medalists, as well as a tsunami of scoring places and personal bests.

Track and field offers an opportunity to improve and go beyond what one has done before. In that context, the true winners include all who have striven to be their best. Medals or not, they leave with the sense of personal satisfaction and a newfound belief in themselves and their capabilities, not solely in the sport, but  in what they can bring to  the coming challenges of life.

‘D’- tales

The Tri-Valley boys’ win was hardly a surprise as the Bears have great depth. The Bears stepped up and rose to the occasion as team leaders Adam Furman, Craig Costa, Van Furman, Armaan Butler, Dayne Wall, Thomas Houghtaling, Talan Scanna, and others, collectively racked up 182 points and won the meet going away.

Pine Plains was second, finishing ahead of third-place Sullivan West, which marshaled an impressive effort with many fine performances including those set forth by pole vaulter Robert Davidson, jumpers Will Nearing and Hunter Ebeling, hurdler Peter March, sprinter Michael Schroeder Jr, thrower Dillan Hanslmaier, distance maven Landon Volpe and others.

While Eldred lacked the numbers to amass many points, it still has its standouts, principally sprinter Cooper Stutz who won the 200 and the 400 and Tyiese Mack who placed in the high jump. Homestead’s Bryce Shannon and Roscoe’s Daniel Aiello also placed to represent their schools.

On the girls’ side of the ledger Tri-Valley was led by eighth grade standout Anna Furman who won the 3000 and the 2000 steeplechase, distance standout Amelia Mickelson, jumper and hurdler Kendall McGregor, 400 hurdler Mackenzie Closs and a host of others who placed and added to the points ledger.

Tri-Valley’s 176 points was far ahead of second place Burke and third place Sullivan West. The Lady Bulldogs got great performances from hurdler/pole vaulter Keely Schock, sprinter, discus thrower, and triple jumper Violla Shami, hurdler and steeplechase participant Brooke Nunnari. Their 4x800 relay took first.

Eldred’s Tabitha Smith placed in both hurdle events.  Homestead’s Gabriela Almonte won the 100 as expected and placed in the long jump.

‘C’-ing progress

While Fallsburg and Liberty continue to rebuild their track and field numbers, both schools registered impressive individual performances. Fallsburg boys finished seventh and continue to rise up the ladder in Class C with increasing numbers and a bevy of  feisty  performers including Nazir Lopez, Donovan Hart, Edwin Morales, Isiah Hershewsky, Jefferson Banegas-Gallo.

The Lady Comets were eighth overall but have a very promising future. Standouts at this meet included Gisella King, Zoey Ketchum, Joslyn Odell-Schrier, Gabriela White and Stephanie Granados.

Liberty lacked the numbers to register many points, but Ivan Rodriquez figured into the boys scoring as did Boise Sellers. Liberty hurdler Sydania Foster placed in the 400 and 400 hurdles.

‘B’-jeweled

Monticello is the only Class B school in Sullivan County track and field and the only one in Division I when it comes to the state qualifier and the state championships.

The Panther boys who won their division for the 11th time in the past 13 years had to contend with a stiff competition at sectionals, primarily from Goshen (whom they beat in division rivalry), Cornwall and New Paltz. The same held true for the girls.

The Monti boys finished seventh out of 10 schools, while the girls placed fifth out of nine. Boys standouts included Eduardo Salinas who won the 800. He was the only Panther to take home gold at the meet. He also placed in the 1600.

Other point gatherers included Enrique Gonzalaz, Tahir Denton, Christian Corces, Jesse Corces, Ignacia Figueiredo, Tyrese Shaw, David Williams, DeAndre Armour and Raphael Liciaga. Freshman Quenten Liciaga was attempting to defend his Class B pentathlon title won at last year’s sectionals.

He finished first in the 110 hurdles, long jump and high jump but fouled in the shot put and finished 12th in the 1500 for a seventh-place total of 2033 points.

For the girls, other teams’ depth and talent was very challenging. Taina DeJesus posted her fastest time in the 100 hurdles since eighth grade (15.74) and placed third. She took second in the 400 hurdles with another PR of 1:04.75.

She hopes to qualify for states in the event though currently there are two girls ahead of her in Section IX Division I. She and other top contenders vied at the state qualifier to see who will go on to the state meet in Middletown. Meg Cruz placed in the 100, 400 and the 4x100 relay which recorded the fasted time in years for Monti girls at 51.26. Other baton carriers the event included Taina DeJesus, Rohanna Patrick and Tiara Harris.

Diya Patel took third in the 2000 steeplechase with her fastest time yet. The sophomore has even more in the tank. Kaitlyn Morse took sixth in the splash fest. Chelsea Reynolds contributed a fast leg in the 4400 relay which placed third. Diya Patel, Meg Cruz and Taina DeJesus filled out the remaining runners in the event.
