County skiers shred to States

MONTICELLO – For the final Section IX Division 1 ski race of the season at Holiday Mountain on Thursday, Feburary 8, two Monticello skiers were once again champions of the slopes as each has won every race this season. 

For the girls’ race, Alexis Heins was over eight seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, speeding to a time of 33.06 seconds in her first run. She did not finish (DNF) her second run, but that did not matter as the better time is considered for results. Coming in behind her was her teammate, Madelyn Cavello at 41.27 seconds.

For the boys’ race, Samuel Rein came in at 33.58 seconds, over two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, his teammate Resse Kelly (35.80).

The Monticello boys’ came in first for the team results, while the TV/Fallsburg/Liberty team was the first-place team for the girls. 

Ski Sectionals took place for both the girls and boys on Wednesday, February 14 at Hunter Mountain. 

The Monticello duo of Heins and Rein won all giant slalom and slalom runs of the day to ski off to states.

Fallsburg/Liberty/TV skier Hudson Danzilo earned his first berth on the state team, finishing in eighth in the Division 1 Boys’ race. 

The top three boys’ Monticello skiers - Rein, Reese Kelly and Diego Ferrer - are the winning Section IX team to compete for the state title at Lake Placid on Monday, February 26 and Tuesday, February 27. 

For the girls, the Fallsburg/Liberty/TV team finished in a tie with the Kingston team.
