Deacon John W. Lyttle Jr. of Damascus, PA passed away on Wednesday August 21st 2024 in Ellen Memorial in Honesdale, PA. He was 84 years old.

John was the son of that late John W. Lyttle Sr. and Mary Drury, born in the Bronx on January 20th 1940.

He served with distinction as a Captain in the US Army and was a resident of Oradell, NJ, and Damascus, PA. Known for his boundless generosity, kindness, and steadfast dedication to his family, John left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

John’s intellectual curiosity and commitment to education were evident throughout his life. He earned degrees from Fordham Prep, Fordham College, Fordham Law (JD), NYU Law School (LLM), and St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada (Doctorate in Canon Law (JCD)). His illustrious legal career, from which he never retired, spanned over 60 years, during which he practiced as a trusts and estates lawyer in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.

John also served as a tenured Law Professor at Duquesne University School of Law, Pittsburgh, PA, where his professional integrity and dedication were deeply admired. His contributions extended beyond law, with significant roles in the Roman Catholic Church, including serving as a Deacon at Holy Cross Church in Callicoon, NY, and as a Judge in the Metropolitan Tribunal, the Ecclesiastical Court of the Archdiocese of New York.

He was survived by his son John Lyttle III and his mother Constance and siblings Mary Ellen Campbell, Patricia Joan Hatfield, Robert Michael Lyttle and wife, Gail, David Francis Lyttle and wife, Patricia, Jeanne Marie Schmauss and husband, David and trusted friend Vincent Maher.

A Mass of Catholic burial will be celebrated on Saturday August 24th 2024 at 11am at St. Mary Magdalen, 416 Church Street, Honesdale, PA 18431. Interment will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
