Despite low numbers, Fallsburg/TV stars shine

FALLSBURG — The merged squad of Fallsburg and Tri-Valley played host to Onteora on Wednesday night for a wrestling matchup. Thanks in part to a handful of forfeits, Onteora was able to secure a 47-12 road victory, largely due to Fallsburg/TV having just four eligible wrestlers.

Out of the four matches, F/TV was able to secure two pin victories, losing one and having another stopped due to injury.

In the 116-pound weight class, Fallsburg’s John Mingo started strong against his opponent before the match was stopped short by the referee due to injury, affording Onteora five points after the TKO.

Lorenzo Haffner, at 145lbs, pinned his opponent to the mat to earn six points for F/TV. The Onteora wrestler often succeeded on his throws, but once they were on the ground, Haffner was able to grab the advantage and earn a hard-fought back pin.

Coming in at 152, Michael Kehlembeck also won his match and secured six points for the Comets. Kehlembeck’s athleticism allowed him to take control of the match from the beginning and as soon as his opponent was tired he was able to force an easy pin.

The final match of the night, in the 285-pound weight class, featured Inmer Santos. Despite a valiant effort, Onteora’s Logan Story managed to win the match by pinfall.

Coach Andrew Foertsch said, “Our strongest asset is definitely our conditioning, and as long as we can stay with our opponents we can usually finish them in the last period. We have a young team of freshmen but I’m very happy with how they did tonight and their overall growth. I’m really proud of them and I know they have bright futures in wrestling.”
