Fallsburg, Roscoe and Tri-Valley square off in Monticello

MONTICELLO – The BCANY Coaches vs Cancer Classic continued at Monticello High School on Saturday afternoon, with the Lady Blue Devils and Lady Comets squaring off at noon, followed by the Blue Devils and Bears at 1:45 p.m. The games, originally scheduled for February 4, were moved due to inclement weather and conflicts.

It was a tough day for Roscoe as both their boys and girls teams were defeated by their opponents in “The Pit” at MHS. The girls game was close throughout the first half, but Fallsburg found their stride in the third quarter outscoring their opponents 17-2 to increase their lead to 25-7. The final score of the game was 32-14 with the Lady Comets taking home the win.

“It was a low scoring first half for us,” Fallsburg Coach Mike Ballard said after the win. “We played sloppy and unaggressive in the first half, but the press was working well and the third quarter was big for us.”

The Tri-Valley and Roscoe boys kicked off their game after the conclusion of the girls game, and featured another tough first half with a slightly lopsided second half. Roscoe got their offense going early, outscoring the Bears 8-6 in the first quarter and 14-13 in the second for a three point lead at the break.

Tri-Valley made some adjustments on both sides of the court and they paid off. They outscored Roscoe 9-3 in the third quarter to change the polarity of the game and take a three point lead into the fourth. Roscoe missed seven of their eight free throws in the quarter, and they only shot 6-for-18 from the line in the game. Tri-Valley, on the other hand, shot 9-for-13 from the charity stripe.

“We focused on them flashing the high post,” Tri-Valley Coach Tylor Irwin said. “We kept them left and denied them the mid-range shots. Our offense picked it up, credit to the team today for getting the win.”

In the fourth quarter, Tri-Valley increased their lead while Roscoe continued their offensive struggles. As the game neared the conclusion, the Blue Devils had to intentionally foul to keep their comeback hopes alive, but it just helped Tri-Valley increase the gap as they finished with 15 points in the quarter to win 43-30.

“We went flat in the second half,” Roscoe Coach Mike Hill said. “We had a hard time putting the ball in the basket.”
