Back in the days of Sullivan Renaissance, the organization that eventually merged and expanded into the sole title of Sullivan 180, there was a dire need for a boost to Sullivan County’s economy and appearance.

Sandra Gerry and her dedicated and talented team of community-minded individuals knew the answer to such a need was simple, yet extremely effective.

As a means to welcome guests and residents alike, encouraging purchases, visits and conversations, this answer came in the form of beautification — the roots of Renaissance and the idea that blossomed into a county-wide project which enhanced the many hamlets, towns and villages which are home to hundreds of businesses.

It is no secret that people want to go to places that look beautiful. And what better way to instantly, affordably and effectively improve the aesthetics of a location than by hanging and planting a variety of flowers? Myriads of seasonal colors, textures and smells stemming from the hanging baskets and gardens guide potential customers to restaurants, thrift shops, grocery stores, outdoor parks, gas stations, historical sites and so much more.

For this, we have to thank Sandra Gerry and Sullivan 180 – for their works leading all the way up to today, and not just for their continued dedication to ensuring the area is adorned with flowers. Their earnest compassion towards the area’s health needs and its thousands of residents are evidence to their unyielding oath to turn the county around, one degree at a time, and continue the dream of the cultural rebirth of our community that has suffered its fair share of hardships and keeps moving forward regardless!

If you see a flower or garden project that was formed by the hands of this great organization, be sure to take a moment to appreciate its beauty. It has been placed there, cultivated and cared for as a precious step towards growth and harmony for all of us to enjoy. In other words, don’t be in too much of a hurry to stop and smell the flowers every once in a while.
