LIVINGSTON MANOR – The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum (CFFCM) hosted the Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T), a collection of ten short films presented by Costa, Simms and Yeti.
The films feature beautiful scenery from around the world as anglers from various backgrounds head to the streams and oceans to fly fish.
Prefacing the event, food from Kaatskellar and Smoke Joint and beer from Catskill Brewery and Upward Brewery were provided to patrons. Land and Water Realty provided non-alcoholic refreshments for the event as well.
Local businesses and supporters of CFFCM provided raffle prizes, and the event also played host to a silent auction.
“It was our first time hosting the film tour, and I think most folks enjoyed it,” CFFCM Executive Director Ali Abate said. “It was the most people we’ve had gathered in the Center since I’ve started here.”
There were around 120 attendees for the Friday evening screening. Both anglers and locals interested in the films were welcomed to the Wulff Gallery for the night.
The idea to host F3T at the museum was presented by Don Borelli and Jim Yeager, and the pair also went to a lot of the local businesses to ensure the success of the event.
“Don and Jim really helped us to bring this together,” Abate said.
“The team of Ali Abate, Executive Director, Todd Spire, Events Coordinator, Ellis Cahill, Connor McCausland and Matt Benham, I’d say we had a pretty solid team effort,” Yeager said. “A lot went into putting this event together. Licensing, sponsors, publishing and coordinating all of the logistics.”
The night was Emcee’d by Tim McCausland, the CFFCM Board Secretary.
Ahead of the screening, a short video from comedian Hank Patterson introducing the event and highlighting the museum and the low cost of membership was played for the audience. Don and Jim reached out to Patterson and he was happy to help.
There was no shortage of support from both local and nationally recognized businesses, many of which donated food or dinner certificates, fishing gear and other prizes.
The Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association was the local event sponsor, after Bob Eckert of Northern Farmhouse Pasta (another business sponsor) reached out to the SCVA on behalf of CFFCM.
The Courtyard Bar, Johnny’s Barber Shop, The Junction, Raimondo’s, the Red Rose Motel and Tavern, Roscoe Campsite Park, Scott Rod Fly Company, the Spotted Cow Cafe, The DeBruce, Decor Outlet, Catskill Brewery, Smoke Joint, Kaatskeller, Land and Water Realty, Upward Brewing, Beaverkill Angler, Brodin Nets, Catskill Fly Tyers Guild, Cliff Outdoors, Cortland Line, Delaware River Club, Dette Flies, Douglas Outdoors, Do Good Spirits, Folstaf, Fur Fin and Feather, Hound Books, Korkers, OnX Hunt, Orvis, Catskills Provisions, R.L. Winston Rod Company, Roscoe Beer Company, Smith Optics, Trout Town Flies and Zen Tenkara were other business sponsors for the event.
“You learn a lot from an event like this,” Abate explained. “It shows us that the interest in CFFCM is there, and we can draw more people and support with a diversity of offerings.”
Following the F3T showing on Friday night, the Wulff Gallery was put back together for a Fly Tyers Guild meeting on Saturday morning, an example of the various ways the Center uses the space.
“It’s great and feels encouraging and supportive when the community comes together for an event like this,” Abate said. “We can’t wait to do more things like this.”
