Freshly paved basketball court at Callicoon Town Park

CALLICOON CENTER – The Callicoon Town Board discussed a proposal to repair the Town Park and proposed pickleball courts in Callicoon Center at their May meeting. Town Supervisor Tom Bose reported at their meeting on Monday, July 8 that the paving had been completed on the basketball courts.

The work was completed by Ratner & Son Paving Inc. based in Woodbourne.

Bose said that the striping of the court will be done by Shortlines Coatings based in Grahamsville, a contractor selected by Ratner & Son. With severe weather in the forecast this week, he said that after speaking to Shortlines, they hope to complete the striping the beginning of next week, depending on the weather.

Back in May, Christina Haff of the Town of Callicoon Youth and Recreation Board noted that they received $7,500 from the County Youth Board. Haff said that some of those funds could be used to purchase the equipment for pickleball. On Monday, Councilman Charles Schadt said he looked into the pickleball nets and that they could get two nets and a storage box to put them in for well under $1,000.

Bose gave Schadt the go-ahead to get what they need since it is under that budget.

Schadt noted the nets come with bars to stand up on the basketball court.

“[We would] just unlock and let people use,” Schadt said. “Put a sign there that people could use it but don’t abuse it and put it back where you got it.”

Bose also noted that there is an old small concession stand by the court which is owned by American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) that is also in need of some repairs, including new shingles on the roof. Bose said that he will get in contact with someone from AYSO regarding making the repairs to the building which is now used as storage for the park.

In addition to that concession stand, there is also a shed that is owned by Red Dogs Youth Football Organization. Bose said that he got in contact with them about getting it painted as the town does its due diligence on maintenance and upkeep of the park.

He also made a note that the town doesn’t want people to drive alongside the backside of the pavilion at the park, as that is where the septic tank is which people are driving over.

Bose said, “If you need to get to the pavilion to unload some supplies, you’re gonna have to come in through the other side.”

Bose also set a reminder out about the Town of Callicoon’s 10th Annual Car Show being held on August 4 at the Town Park in Callicoon Center.
