Super Bowl #58 is coming up very soon on February 11th and will take place in Las Vegas. Not being a big football fan I’m not sure, and I don’t think it’s been determined which teams will be playing in the event. But the American tradition is filled with food, the football game, highly publicized commercials, and a star-studded halftime show which is the part I usually watch. This year the half-time show, which is viewed by over one hundred million fans worldwide, will be headlined by the legendary singer and eight-time Grammy-winner Usher and Reba McEntire will sing our national anthem. Locally for me and many others the best feature about Super Bowl Sunday is that the St Anthony’s Knights of Columbus will be holding their annual Super Bowl Breakfast Buffet. On Super Bowl Sunday, February 11th from 8:00am to 1:00pm, the “all you can eat” breakfast will take place in the Parish Hall located on Beaverbrook Road across from St. Anthony’s Church in Yulan. The twenty plus members of the Knights, the Cardinal John J. O’Connor Chapter, manage all planning and operations for the breakfast. They also work on a variety of events throughout the year to support the Parish and the faith-based communities at large.

The Knights of Columbus Super Bowl Breakfast Feast is now entering its 22nd year, and they typically serve between 110-130 attendees. The Breakfast will be offering scrambled eggs, breads, pancakes, home fries, sausages, bacon and a variety of beverages, and the price is very reasonable at $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children.

As part of the breakfast, the Knights are sponsoring an array of traditional Super Bowl games and activities-especially the very popular “Lucky Squares.” The prices for buying chances are $5 to $10. per square with a cash prize awarded after each quarter and then the final score with a top cash prize of $350.00, and the winner will be announced at breakfast. With many chances to participate and win some prizes and have a wonderful home cooked breakfast with friends and neighbors, and participate in the Super Bowl festivities, how can you go wrong? The Knights of Columbus member in charge of the breakfast is Pete Scalia who told me that all the funds raised from the breakfast will go to projects for St. Anthony’s Church. Tickets can be purchased after Mass, at the Yulan Service Station or at the door on the day of the event. For more information, you can call the Rectory at 845-557-8512.

Our community was saddened to learn about the sudden passing last week of local businessman Ron Thiele. So many of us knew him not only from his landscaping and excavation business but also from football coaching, town events and being a volunteer firefighter. Friends are invited to call starting at 4pm on Wednesday, January 31st at the Harrison Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville, and there will be a Memorial Service starting at 6:30pm. My sincere condolences to his family.
