October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To show support for those affected by breast cancer, people wear pink ribbons to raise awareness for continued medical research and improved patient care.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Garnet Health Medical Center is offering free breast health screenings including a mammogram for qualified women.

The medical screening visit will include a clinical breast exam, a mammogram and breast health counselling and information. The screening will take place on Saturday October 26th at the Garnet Health Medical Center {GHMC} @707 East Main Street in Middleton and on Wednesday, October 30th at GHMC @Catskill 68 Harris Bushville Road in Harris N.Y.

Appointments are required and open to women over the age of 50 years old, who do not have any health Insurance coverage and have not had a routine mammogram within the past year. According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but when detected early it can be treated successfully.

Appointments are limited so to schedule your free screening and mammogram please contact garnethealth.org/freemammograms.

The top academic students of the National Honor Society at the Eldred Central School are continuing their public service events that greatly benefit our local community with an upcoming blood drive. In partnership with the American Red Cross, the Society’s students are hosting the drive to help deal with the acute blood supply shortage that is happening in our country right now.

The members of the National Honor Society put in a lot of time volunteering in our community in a variety of ways and they deserve to have our support and recognition for their community work.

The Blood Drive is open to everyone in the community so we all can have the opportunity to donate and support the work of these hard-working students and help alleviate the blood shortage. The blood drive will be held in the Eldred JSHS School’s cafeteria at 600 State Route 55 on Wednesday, October 23rd from 2-5PM. To register for an appointment, go to www.redcross.org and walk-ins are always welcome!

Next Saturday October 26th is the last Barryville Farmers Market of the season. It is also the Market’s Halloween Party. In addition to the usual fabulous vendors, The Halloween event is a family centric party with something of interest and entertainment for everyone. It starts at 10am and goes on until 1pm.

There will be a baking contest, free apple cider, and a wonderful costume parade along the road by the Delaware River to the Barryville Cul de Sac where the Trunk and Treat takes place. Then it is back to the Market for the judging in several different categories of best costume for kids and pets.

Over the past years there have been some amazingly creative costumes, and the prizes are gift baskets from local businesses and toys for the little ones. Then the dance party takes over with live rock music by the Nowhere Slow Band and everyone has a blowout good time.

The Halloween Party is beautiful under the colorful Fall canopy and the perfect closure for the Barryville Farmers Market and features delicious food, live music, cute little dogs all decked out trying very hard to stay in their costumes and jamming at the dance party like nobody is watching!

It is a not to be missed event. So, bake that pie or cake, gather your costume, and get ready. The party is free, and everyone is welcome. For more information go to the Barryville Chamber of Commerce site at barryvilleny.com.
