Roscoe-Rockland Fire Dept. teaches Roscoe students the importance of fire safety

ROSCOE — October 6-12 was Fire Prevention Week, and schools and departments around Sullivan County and beyond took part in the event, helping teach the youth the importance of fire safety.

Roscoe students from Pre-K to 6th grade were invited for a variety of different demonstrations at the Roscoe-Rockland Fire Department, who were joined by members of the Cooks Falls Fire Department, which included stop, drop, and roll, as well as using a hose line.

The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) campaign this year, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” highlighted the importance of having working smoke detectors in your home and, as always, what to do if there is a fire.

There was also a trailer in the parking lot that simulated a house, and after a short educational video, groups of students had to simulate calling 9-1-1 and getting out of the house safely.

Knowing who is protecting the community is also important for young minds to learn. To show them who is under the mask, students got to meet some of the fire fighters at a station without their fire-protective gear on, and go over each of the pieces of equipment that they use.
