October 17 — With a beautiful colorful backdrop of some spectacular fall foliage, the Halloween season is upon us. Recently I have read several news reports of a looming candy shortage, so I am going to outline several Halloween events so the kiddos can get their game plan in place.

The Barryville Farmers Market is holding their annual Halloween & Harvest Fest on Saturday October 29 from 10-1 p.m. It is also the last Farmers Market of the 2022 season.

There will be a cooking contest with prizes, a kids and dog costume contest with prizes, special live music by the Little Mermen, the premier costumed Disney tribute Band playing favorites from classic Disney movies and hosting a dance party until the Market closes.

Then the finale – the much-anticipated Halloween Parade of costumed Halloween revellers will be singing Disney tunes and winding their way from the Farmers Market along River Road to the Cul-de-sac for a Trunk & Treat event.

I participated last year (and will again this year) and it was a fun event as kids got a good haul of candy and had a lot of fun. Participant vehicles are still needed for the Trunk & Treat (trunk decorations optional) so if you are interested in participating, please contact Mary Jones Mellett at mjonesmellett@gmail.com or call her at 917-593-0307.

For the schedule of the Halloween events at the Farmers Market go to barryvillefarmersmarket.org.

The Town of Highland Lions Club will be holding a Penny Social on Saturday October 29 at the Senior Center, 725 Route 55. The door opens at 1p.m. and the calling begins at 3p.m. There will be great door prizes and refreshments are available for purchase.

New this year is a Money Tree Raffle with a cash prize of $250-$300 and a raffle ticket is $5. Everyone is invited and Halloween costumes are highly encouraged. For more information go to the Town of Lions Facebook page.

The Lumberland Fire Department and the Town of Lumberland Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a Trunk & Treat event for kids 12 years old and younger on Sunday, October 30 from 2-4p.m. in Circle Park next to the Lumberland Town Hall.

All children must be accompanied by an adult and no pets please. You can drop off a carved pumpkin at the Trunk & Treat to help decorate Circle Park. Three $25 gift certificates will be awarded for the scariest, silliest, and most original carved pumpkins. To volunteer for the Trunk & Treat or get more information go to the Lumberland Fire Department page on Facebook.

The Yulan Fire Department will be holding a Trunk & Treat on Monday, October 31 at the Yulan Ball Field from 5-7p.m. Parents and other community members are invited to come and join the festivities and hand out candy (trunk decorations are optional) and please arrive between 4:30-4:45p.m. to set up.

Everyone from the community is invited to attend and children can wear costumes and trick or treat in a safe environment. For information visit the Yulan Fire Department’s Facebook page or email beth.deyermond@gmail.com.
