Home sweet homecoming: Tri-Valley shines in win over Cairo-Durham/Catskill

GRAHAMSVILLE — The Bears are back in the win column after cruising to victory on Saturday afternoon. After Livingston Manor had to forfeit the game in the middle of the week, Tri-Valley was able to schedule a non-league game against Cairo-Durham/Catskill (CCD), a Section IV team, for homecoming weekend.

Offense was easy to come by for the Bears, who put up a staggering 50 points in the win. After winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half, Tri-Valley’s defense was in trouble early. CCD drove the length of the field before turning it over on downs at the Tri-Valley 15-yard-line.

From the shadow of their own end zone, it took the Bears just two plays to run 85 yards for the touchdown. It was QB Josh Fanslau’s first of many on the day, and he converted the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0 less than four minutes into the game.

On the ensuing drive, Tri-Valley intercepted a CCD pass for a touchdown, but it was called back for a block in the black flag, setting the Bears up at the CCD 20 instead. Easton Scanna bounded into the end zone to make it 14-0, and Fanslau converted another 2-point attempt.

On CCD’s next drive, they stalled around midfield but faked a punt to move deep into TV territory. CCD scored with 1:31 to play in the first and converted the 2-point attempt to make it 16-8.

Fanslau rushed for another touchdown to make it 22-8, still with 29 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

CCD started their drive before the end of the quarter, making their way down to the TV 35 to start the second. The drive stalled, however, and Tri-Valley quickly made their way down the field for a score, making it 28-8.

A sack-fumble on the ensuing drive gave the Bears a first-and-goal to start the drive, and Fanslau found the end zone again to make it 36-8 after another successful two-point conversion.

CD turned the ball over on downs their next time down the field, and the Bears’ offense took over on their own 40. A few plays later, Fanslau found Misha Khodakovski in the air for a score, making it 42-8 with just over two minutes to play in the first half.

The second half moved quickly, with the clock running continuously as both offenses continued to work. CCD scored with 1:44 left in the third quarter to make it 42-16. They successfully recovered an onside kick but quickly fumbled it back to Tri-Valley.

With 9:50 remaining in the fourth, CCD found the end zone again, making it 42-22.

Tri-Valley fell on the next onside kick, starting on their own 39. Zach Whipple, who took over as QB in the second half, took it to the house with time winding down to make it 50-22.

“We knew we needed to rebound this week,” Tri-Valley Coach Kevin Crudele said after the win. “We took a step back this week to focus on the basics, and our number one goal was to play as a team. I’m happy with the improvements, but we always have to build on it.”

Tri-Valley will host Ticonderoga, another Section IV non-league team, next Saturday at 2 p.m.
