LOCH SHELDRAKE — More than 60 campers made their way to SUNY Sullivan’s Paul Gerry Fieldhouse this week to participate in the annual youth basketball camp.

Under the tutelage of Coach Ben Newberg and his capable team of assistant coaches, basketball players from 7-17 had the opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends on the court.

“We have some great coaches with a lot of experience,” Coach Ben Newberg said. “It’s always great to give back to the community.”

After lunch on Wednesday, the campers broke into groups and competed in different drills, getting to the basket and scoring as many points as possible from different angles.

From there, the age groups were split up and the campers played dribble knockout, practicing their stealing skills while simultaneously having to protect the ball.

For the final hour of the day, the groups scrimmaged in first-to-five games, with the winners staying on to face the next group.

Newberg and his group of assistant coaches run a tight ship, using the game clock and buzzers to move efficiently from drill to drill.

“The turnout was really good this year,” Newberg added. “There are a lot of different age groups and we have more than 60 kids here.”

The week long camp is a great way to build basketball skills in the offseason, with structured drills and even a chance to win prizes.
