LIBERTY – The Liberty Town Board approved a local law on Monday, October 5, overriding the state property-tax cap for fiscal year 2027, following a public hearing focused on rising municipal costs, lost revenue and the financial impact of higher property taxes.
The hearing centered on whether the town should exceed the amount allowed under the state tax cap as it prepares its 2027 budget. The discussion highlighted the financial pressures facing the town, with board members highlighting that the town has gone approximately nine years without a tax increase while facing higher operating costs.
While some residents were in support of the increase, others opposed it bringing attention to the effect of additional property taxes on residents, particularly families and older homeowners on fixed or limited incomes. Concerns were raised about the ability of some taxpayers to absorb another increase while continuing to afford basic necessities.
The discussion included the possibility of establishing an additional local ceiling on any increase, providing another limit even after the state cap was overridden. It was noted that maintaining funding for the town’s services was also a central consideration, including Parks and Recreation and other municipal operations.
Ultimately, the board approved the tax-cap override. The decision came as the town moves forward with its 2027 budget process. Additional budget review meetings are expected as the town determines spending and revenue levels for the coming fiscal year.
