Livingston Manor and Roscoe celebrate fall and winter student-athletes

LIVINGSTON MANOR — Student-athletes, coaches, friends, family and staff gathered in the Livingston Manor auditorium on Monday afternoon to recognize all of the fall and winter athletic programs from modified up to varsity.

There were awards aplenty as each team was called up by their respective coaches as they reminisced upon the past seasons.

Though the Varsity Football team was able to play just one game this season due to low numbers, the group practiced every day, accruing 40 practices on the season and getting ready for next year. Hunter Banks, who made it to every practice throughout the year, received a Coaches Award from Coach Mike Hill.

Up next was Coach Maggi Fitzpatrick and the Section IX Class D Champion Girls Soccer team. Sarah Gorr and Michelle McKinley received Coaches Awards, Athena Niforatos received a Sportsmanship Award, and Rebecca Gashinsky was the team’s MVP.

Following that, it was Coach Nate Juron and the Varsity Boys and Girls Cross Country teams. Though they didn’t have enough athletes to score in their meets, having three and needing five, the team still found individual success and worked hard. Cullen Hess received a Sportsmanship Award, Logan Schmeiser received a Coaches Award and Brody Day, who was typically the team’s top finisher, was the MVP.

For the winter sports, Coach Charlie Hicks and the Boys Basketball team were up next, fresh off of a sectional loss to Chapel Field. It was the first time that the Livingston Manor and Roscoe boys merged their basketball team, and they found a great deal of success despite having to learn to play together.

Coach Hicks awarded a handful of players with certificates, each emphasizing the different roles they played on the team from Sharpshooter to Spark Plug. For the plaques, Wesley Kinne received the Sportsmanship Award and Aiden Johnston was the team’s MVP.

Up next, Coach Fitzpatrick returned to the podium to call up the Girls Basketball team. The girls had a much tougher time acclimating to the merged team, earning just one win on the season. Despite the lone win, the team grew throughout and ended with the season with their highest point total in a 2-point loss to Liberty. There were two Sportsmanship Award winners, EmmaRae Owen and Sarah Gorr.

Sarah Evans and Zaylee Cox earned Coaches Awards for the team as well.

The Cheerleading team was the last of the Varsity teams to be recognized, and Coach LeMyre took to the stage before calling up and recognizing the squad. Though they don’t track wins and losses, the Cheerleading team is a cohesive unit, working together and providing support from the sidelines. Alivia Garcia and Isabella Park received Coaches Awards for the season, and Krysta Hallock received a Sportsmanship Award.

Four teams across the fall and winter spectrum earned Scholar Athlete Team honors, meaning that the entire team earned a 90 percent or higher average in the classroom.

The teams included Varsity Girls Soccer and Basketball, Varsity Cheerleading and Varsity Boys Cross Country.

Both schools also announced their 2023-24 Scholar Athletes of the Year at the banquet.

Roscoe’s award winners were Aiden Johnston and Athena Niforatos. For Livingston Manor, Sarah Evans earned the award, voted on by the Livingston Manor-Roscoe Athletic Department Varsity Coaches.
