Man airlifted to Westchester Medical after minivan, school bus collision

JEFFERSONVILLE — A minivan headed eastbound on State Route 52 carrying two children crossed over the double yellow line and struck a school bus headed westbound, according to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office. The collision happened at 8:28 a.m. yesterday morning in the vicinity of Smith Farm in Jeffersonville.

The driver of the minivan, Charles McAdams of Loch Sheldrake, 70, was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to Westchester Medical Center. The two children were on their way to the school in White Sulphur Springs and were reported to have no apparent injuries, but were taken to Callicoon’s Garnet Health as a precaution. 

On the bus were the driver and an aide, both reportedly received no injuries. The driver refused medical attention while the aide went to Callicoon’s Garnet Health out of precaution. There were no children present on the school bus at the time of the collision.

Responding to the scene were the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, the Sullivan County Emergency Management Team, Youngsville Fire Department, Jeffersonville Fire Department, Jeffersonville EMS, Upper Delaware EMS and Bethel EMS. 

The collision remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, assisted by New York State Police and the Sullivan County District Attorney’s (DA) Office.

*Officials have confirmed since publication of the original article that the driver of the minivan passed away yesterday, May 20, while at Westchester Medical Center.
