More than just books!

Public libraries remain the key to communal knowledge. For nearly two centuries in the United States, institutions such as these have acted as a bastion of intellectual progress and a place for anyone to quench their thirst for answers, and continue to act in that role today.

The best part is that these services are well within reach. After completing the simple task of acquiring a library card, the world of wonders is opened to you. And as their resources grow and expand, these libraries offer more than just books, maps and other paper-based entertainment – now the aisles are home to modern entertainment media, like video games!

While the general consensus of the noun “video game” tends to have a negative connotation, the medium is responsible for learning on many different levels of education, interest and learning styles. They’re not all blood, guns and gore. Some games offer unforgettable lessons in arithmetic, the alphabet, shapes, history, art and so many more categories that people of all ages can utilize to their advancement.

These educational games have been enjoyed with great interest from library-goers at the Mamakating Library, and many other libraries county-wide to be sure. These resources have found a home there, and as another modern way to learn new information, it is perfect for the library.

It is with great pride and profound resilience that Sullivan County is home to three branches of the Western Sullivan Public Library. These include the Delaware Free Branch in Callicoon, the Jeffersonville Branch and the Tusten-Cochecton Branch in Narrowsburg. Not to mention the other independent libraries, like the many municipal institutions, as well as the Sunshine Hall Free Library, the Black Library and the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library.

As the weather stays warm, visit your local branch and take refuge in the air conditioning and see what new wonder is hiding between the pages, (or game covers) just waiting for you to explore!
