Now that was something to crow about

CALLICOOON –  Early morning visitors to the Callicoon Post Office may have heard an unusual sound last Saturday morning – the crowing of roosters.

“Yes, they have been here since 7 a.m.,” a postal employee said when asked about the unusual noise coming from the back loading dock.

The 10 Bantam Roosters were shipped from Puerto Rico to Callicoon special express and were heading to a nearby farm.

They arrived in a brown cardboard boxes with plenty of holes in them, five roosters to each compartmentalized box. Hay appeared to be in each compartment, making the roosters feel at home.

The farmer said the roosters would be well fed, given water and put in a pen so they could get acclimated to their new home before they could roam the barnyard.

Guests at nearby 9 River Road in Callicoon, which sits next to the Callicoon Post Office, certainly got an unexpected wake up call last Saturday but hopefully the new arrivals can sleep easier this weekend knowing the roosters are in good hands.
