There are many rules in the golf game but I’m going to just discuss three of them.
1. Out of Bounds: Defined by white stakes or lines around the course. If your ball lands outside those barriers it’s considered off the course or OUT OF BOUNDS. You must take a 1 shot penalty and replay from the spot you just hit from. It’s that simple. There is a local rule that a few courses use but it’s confusing and we don’t need to confuse players.
2. Penalty Areas: If your ball lands in a Yellow staked area you can play from there if possible. The other options are to replay the shot with a 1 shot penalty from where you last hit it or drop a ball as far back as you want keeping in line with the flag from where the ball entered the area.
3. Lateral relief (red penalty areas only). The player can drop the ball within two club-lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area, no closer to the hole, again with a one-shot penalty.
