BARRYVILLE — One man was shot and taken into custody on Tuesday at approximately 2:15 p.m. after State Troopers responded to a report of a suspicious subject in a vehicle at a business on State Route 97 in Barryville, according to State Police.

Upon locating the individual, identified as Paul Gosselin, age 63, from Augusta, Maine, the subject claimed to have a gun and stated that he would shoot the troopers.

Gosselin fled to a secondary business, the then closed Il Castello Restaurant’s parking lot on State Route 97 where he exited and reentered his vehicle and began to drive in the direction of a Town of Lumberland Constable who was on foot, which spurred on the State Troopers to open fire, striking Gosselin once.

Promptly following the rendering of first aid, a call was put in for a medivac helicopter to transport the injured individual, where he has since been listed as being in stable condition.

State Police say the investigation is ongoing and further updates will be released as they become available. They request that anyone with information on this incident contact the State Police in Middletown at 845-344-5300.
