Songs of discovery: new resource enhances therapy through music

Songs of Discovery for Music Therapy: A Practical Resource for Therapists and Educators has been released, offering a unique collection of 32 original songs designed to aid in therapeutic and educational settings.

Developed by music therapists at The Center for Discovery (TCFD), the book serves as a comprehensive tool for enhancing social, motor and cognitive skills through music.

Co-editors Conio Loretto and Amanda Ruddy Belcastro shared insights on how the book came to life.

“Our main goal was to pass down the tradition of using music to engage and inspire,” said Belcastro. The songs originated from real clinical situations over decades, reflecting diverse scenarios where music became a powerful tool for connection and healing.

“Every song in this collection has been tested in our practice,” Loretto added. “It’s a testament to years of creativity and spontaneous song-making during sessions.”

The book includes greetings, rhythmic chants, and songs for self-awareness and social connectedness. These pieces encourage educators and therapists to adapt and personalize the songs, supporting activities that promote motor skills, emotional expression, and cognitive development.

Each song comes with sheet music and instructions, making it easy to incorporate into various settings, whether with children, adults or seniors.

Belcastro said that the songs are like a recipe that others can adjust based on their needs.

“You can take the songs as-is or adapt them. It’s all about finding what works best for your session,” she said.

Loretto stressed this adaptability, noting that the book encourages therapists to modify melodies and rhythms to meet the unique needs of each individual.

“We say, use it however it makes sense... sometimes the song could just be the foundation of an idea for somebody else,” Loretto added.

Released by Jessica Kingsley Publishers in July 2023, the book has gained traction on platforms like Amazon and OverDrive.

It’s available as an e-book and can be purchased directly from TCFD, who hope to make it available in local stores across Sullivan County soon. For those who prefer digital formats, the collection is also downloadable, providing easy access for therapists looking to implement these songs in their sessions.

“Seeing the book published was thrilling,” said Belcastro. “It’s a way to preserve the creative work we’ve done and share it beyond our walls.” She and Loretto feel pride in how their music has already begun reaching a broader audience, with educators and therapists using these resources across different settings.

“One of my students even recognized me as the co-editor of the book,” Loretto shared, highlighting the book’s growing impact within the therapy community.

The book is not just for professional music therapists; it also serves as a resource for educators and anyone leading musical engagement activities.

“Even a music teacher incorporated our songs into their curriculum,” Loretto added. The flexibility of the songs allows for broad use, from early childhood programs to senior care.

The Center for Discovery employs eight full-time music therapists who work across day and evening shifts, seven days a week. All TCFD music therapists are Board Certified by the Certification Board for Music Therapists, and the center has been a leader in training since 1999, welcoming over 150 college students from more than 40 universities, including international interns from Japan, Korea, and Israel.

TCFD music therapists are also regular presenters at national and regional conferences, and many have held leadership positions within professional organizations.

“We are really committed to advancing the field of music therapy and sharing best practices from our work at the Center,” Belcastro added. “Songs of Discovery is a part of that commitment.”

Songs of Discovery for Music Therapy is available on Amazon and other major online retailers.
