Walter J. Peters of Jeffersonville, NY, a retired Corrections Officer at Woodbourne Correctional Facility and long-time area resident went home to be with his Lord surrounded by his loved ones on Friday, October 18, 2024, at his home. He was 83 years old.

The son of the late Frederick Elimar and Helen Rasch Peters, he was born July 16, 1941, in Queens, NY. Walter proudly served our country in the US Navy from 1959-1962, he was a 61-year member and past Chief from 1979-1981 of the Protection Hose Company #1 in Jeffersonville, NY, from 1981-1993 he served as a Sullivan County Fire Investigator; he was the founding member of the Wack-N-Stack Hunting Club.

He was a gifted dowser, coining the phrase “Finding Nouns Assisted by God”. He was an avid outdoorsman, passing his love for hunting and fishing onto many others. Later in life he became an ordained minister through Christian Harvest Church.

Family was Walter’s number one priority. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Betty L. Schaefer Peters, at home; three sons, Kevin Peters and his wife Bonnie of White Sulphur Springs, NY, Douglas Peters of Buck Brook, NY, and Craig Peters of Jeffersonville, NY; one sister, Barbara Festa; six grandchildren, Derek Austin, Jackie Poley and husband Chris, Tylor Peters, Trevor Peters, Dylan Peters, Paige Ottino; two great-grandchildren, Genavieve Poley, Jack Poley, and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by two brothers Andrew Peters, Fredrick Peters, and two sisters Carol Luciano, and Lorraine Kuebler.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 23, 2024, from 4 to 7 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley, Liberty, NY. Firematic services will begin at 7 PM in the funeral home.

Funeral services will be Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 11 AM, in the funeral home. The Rev. Virigina Bossley will officiate. Burial will be at the Sullivan County Veteran’s Cemetery, Liberty, NY, with military honors.

In lieu of flowers the family requests any memorial contributions be made to B.A.T.S(batsforvets.org) or Tunnels to Towers (T2T.org).
