And just like that, it’s all changed. 

Sunday morning, we woke up in a world where two aging white men were the top runners for president. 

Monday morning, we woke up in a world where it appears a Black woman will, for the first time ever, be the presidential candidate on the ticket for one of the nation’s two major parties. 

With President Joe Biden’s endorsement, it’s looking incredibly likely that Vice President Kamala Harris will be the Democratic nominee. 

You don’t have to like her. 

It won’t make her different from any other candidate for president. 

Most Americans don’t like the people atop the ballot in any presidential election, and this year has been no different. In January, a majority of Americans said in a Reuters/Ipsos survey that they didn’t think Donald Trump OR Joe Biden should run for president in 2024. 

You don’t have to like her. 

Here’s what you do have to do ... 

Speak about her education and qualifications, not her sex life. 

Debate over her leadership style, not her gender. 

Talk about her values and beliefs, not the color of her skin. 

Chew on her experience, not the pronunciation of her name. 

Remember that no matter how you feel about Vice President Kamala Harris, little girls and little boys across the nation are listening to the adults around them right now. 

They hear how you talk about a Black woman running for president.
