ROSCOE - At 10:35 a.m., June 30, tragedy struck when 90 mile per hour winds took down numerous trees, killing Carol E. Luistro of Edison, NJ in her camper at Russell Brook Campsites. At least one other person was injured in the storm.
The National Weather Service report lists RVs, campers, tents, and at least two vehicles were damaged in a microburst. Driving into the area, there were downed trees on numerous properties, and folks have been out clearing the debris. Emergency services were dispatched with equipment to rescue anyone trapped or injured by the storm. Eastern Dutchess County Fire and Rescue reported multiple people trapped in cabins and campers.
The owners of the campgrounds were struck by the tragedy, and could only think about what was yet to come. Current guests needed water, the campgrounds needed power to keep their buildings running, and upcoming reservations needed to be canceled.
New York State Assemblyman Joe Angelino (NY-121), and U.S. Congressman Marc Molinaro (NY-19) came out to survey the damages. Molinaro spoke briefly in the hamlet of Roscoe, expressing his gratitude for the first responders.
“We all share a deep sense of sadness, and also shock as to the power of the storm. Responders are working to restore electricity, reopen roadways and respond to property damage. We just wanted to extend our thoughts and prayers to those that were impacted, and to acknowledge that our first responders [worked] hard through the storm, and [will continue] through the next few days and weeks.”
