SULLIVAN COUNTY– Sullivan County’s track and field student-athletes just wrapped up a busy week of regional sectional championships and are now preparing for a demanding week of state qualifiers.
In the Section IX Class B Championships, The Liberty Redhawks’ Audrey Krum finished in first place in the girls 800 meter pentathlon in 2:41.24, and had a second place finish in the girls pent high jump clearing a height of 4-01.25. Senior pole vaulter Brooke Bull finished in second place clearing an 11 foot vault. Peyton Rivera finished first in the boys pent shot put with a throw of 33-10.25, and once again the Redhawks girls 4x100 meter relay team finished in the top three with a time of 51.01 behind Minisink Valley 50.78 and Goshen 49.13.
Boys’ Head Coach Roothland Medina commented, “As the season goes on the kids start to sharpen their skills, their starting to focus because they know that these next few meets are more important. We had a a two week break so that helped us recover from all the injuries and over training with so many competitions back-to-back. It was nice to have a rest. Hopefully we’ll see more pr’s today. State quals are coming up so I hope we’ll be ready for that.”
Nicky Cole from Monticello finished in fourth and fifth places respectively in the girls shot put and discus with throwsa of 28.82, and 31-07.
The Panthers’ 4x400 meter relay team had a fourth place finish in 4:19.92 behind Walkill, 4:12.61, Cornwall 4:06, and Minisink 3:59.68. Baya Titus finished a solid fourth in the girls’ 2000-meter steeplechase with a time of 7:39.99. Meanwhile, Dion Knight improved his discus throw from 109 feet at the OCIAA Championships to 130-02, to secure a second-place finish.
In the Class C Sectionals last week Eldred’s Tabitha Smith had a strong overall showing in the girls pentathlon finishing fourth in the long jump 12-09.5, second in the high jump 4-05, fourth in the 800 meter 2:54.90, and third in the 100 meter hurdles at 19.62. Fellow Yellowjacket Elizabeth Herrmann finished just shy of her season best (89-00) in the discus with a throw of 88-11 good enough for a third place finish. Fallsburg’s Zoey Ketcham brought home the gold in the girls’ 100 meter dash with a time of 12.65. Sophia Richardson of Tri-Valley finished close behind in third place in 13.10, and Tyiese Mack finished just outside of the top three in fourth place in 11.57 in the boys finals. Fallsburg’s girls 4x100 meter relay team finished in third place in 51.92.
Logan Ballard of Rockland Central School finished seventh in the boys pole vault clearing 8-00 and the boys 4x100 meter relay team just missed the top 10 with an eleventh place with a run time of 50.69.
Sullivan West’s Gracyn Halloran is the girls Class C 800 meter champion finishing at the top of the podium in 2:18.99, while finishing third in the 1500 meter in 4:54.68. Matthew Malara cleared the boys 100 meter hurdles in a time of 16.83 for an impressive second place finish.
Giuseppe Gardner and Lilyana O’Dell claimed third and fourth place finishes in the steeplechase finals, with Gardner running 11:13.86 in the boys’ 3000-meter and O’Dell finishing in 8:34.86 in the girls’ 2000-meter event.
In a thrilling display of speed, strength, and pure determination, the Tri-Valley girls track and field team won the crown, capturing first place at the Section IX Class C Championships!
Their combined score after 19 events was 129.5, while the boys finished in second place with a combined score of 75 points behind Spackenkill’s 90 points. Brady Knight, ran 4:56.62, in the boys 1600 meter finals securing a fourth place finish. Anna Furman claimed matching titles at the OCIAA and Section IX Class C Championships, winning both the 1500 and 3000-meter races, in addition to the steeplechase. State ‘quals are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday June 3rd and 4th for all qualifying athletes.
