Comets celebrate their seniors despite loss at the buzzer

FALLSBURG – The entire town came out to say farewell to their senior Comets this past week as they took their home court one last time to face Seward.

It was a very emotional celebration of hard work for several of the basketball players and cheerleaders.

There were laughs as Coach Lionel White told funny stories as he introduced his boys one by one behind tears. Kiffanie Rogers-Sanchez, the varsity cheer coach told heartwarming memories of her girls over the years. With emotions in the air the game did not disappoint.

Fallsburg and Seward both came out swinging and would not go down without a fight. The athletes fought hard from the tip-off to the final buzzer of the game.

The intense play had the crowd on their feet. The home team would go on a run and the visiting team would an-swer.  Cheers and jeers went together. A well fought battle between two great clubs.

No one held the upper hand. These two teams were evenly matched. It was a back-and-forth contest until the final buzzer. The Comets were down by one and had one last chance to grab the win but the final shot at the buzzer didn’t fall for the Comets guard Nick Storm despite his tremendous effort. The Comets took a tough 61-60 loss to the Spartans.

Despite coming up short at the buzzer, Coach White had nothing but positive words for his seniors. “We came out and we fought like I knew we would. I have a great group of seniors and I will definitely miss them. They gave me their all and that’s all I can ask for. Had a couple shots late not fall that we thought would, and that’s something we have to live with. But these boys not giving up and continuing to fight till the last second is all I ask for and they delivered. I’m proud of them.”

Fallsburg was led by senior sharpshooter Nick Storm who netted in 21 points in the loss and was accompanied by Daryl McPherson and Jeffery Evangelista Jr who added 16 and 11 points respectively for the home team.

Seward was led by freshman guard Grey Whitmore who had 24 points for the visiting team.
