FALLSBURG – The shadows stretched out onto the Fallsburg soccer field Wednesday, where the girls’ varsity team hosted Port Jervis for a non-league game. The cold weather went unnoticed as the Comets battled through to win the match, shutting out the visiting Raiders 2 to 0.

Fallsburg scored right out of the gate. Elizbeth Navarrete sliced through the Port Jervis defenders driving the ball past Port’s goalkeeper to give Fallsburg the early lead.

Shortly into the second half Fallsburg’s Navarrete, corralled the ball into the net after a corner kick, driving it home to put the Comets up by two.

Port Jervis surged to take control, keeping the ball in  Fallsburg’s zone during the final 20  minutes of the game. The Raiders displayed good ability to work together and pass the ball effectively, but they were unable get enough shots on goal. Fallsburg held on, weathering the Port Jervis late game storm, and secured the win.

Port Jervis assistant coach Sarah Beirne said after the game, “We didn’t play our best, we probably could have played a lot better, but we’re down a couple of players, banged up a little, but we’ll come back stronger in our next game.”

Fallsburg head coach Kassandra Foertsch was jubilant, “I couldn’t have asked them to play a better game. They came out and did exactly what we’ve been trying to do all season; make passes and communicate. That’s been our biggest challenge, communicating, but today showed that if you communicate and work together the wins take care of themselves. The Port Jervis girls, we always like playing them, they’re a great team to go up against, both the girls and the coaches are really respectful. I’m just really happy.”
