MAMAKATING — Charges for vehicular manslaughter, two counts of vehicular assault, and driving while intoxicated have been brought against the 17-year-old male driver of the vehicle that crashed early on Sunday September 22, killing a student from Minisink Valley High School.

The 2014 Honda CRV’s four occupants were all Minisink High School students. Jack Braun, 17, was killed in the collision, according to State Police.

They were driving west on Route 17 near exit 114 in the Town of Mamakating when the accident happened, just before 1:30 a.m. The driver’s injuries were not life-threatening. He was found to be handicapped.

According to a person with direct knowledge of the matter, the driver’s mother works as a probation officer and his father is an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy.

One passenger was taken to Wallkill’s Garnet Health Medical Center before being flown to Westchester Medical Center, while the other two were transported there in critical condition.

According to the police, Braun was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in Wallkill where he passed away.

The Bloomingburg Fire Department, Mobile Medic, Hatzolah EMS, Rock Hill EMS, Atlantic Air One, and Hackensack Air One all provided support to the State Police on the scene.

Counselors are on hand at the Minisink school system to offer assistance to both employees and pupils.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have seen the car before the crash or witnessed the collision is asked to contact State Police at 845-344-5300, which is the number for the Troop F headquarters in the Town of Wallkill.
