Get ready for a Happening in Hurleyville

HURLEYVILLE — The Borscht Belt Marker Project is just getting warmed up for their next summer event.

On Sunday, July 21, the Marker Project will be hosting  their next marker dedication as part of a larger event. Titled “A Happening in Hurleyville”, this event will feature their seventh historical marker dedication.

The total number of planned markers altogether is planned to be 20. The event is to be a literary and arts expo that celebrates the Borscht Belt.

The event will start at 1:00 p.m. with the Historical Marker Dedication at the Hurleyville Performing Arts Center (HPAC) which will pay tribute to the Borscht Belt era of Hurleyville.

“We’re thrilled to be dedicating our 7th historic marker in what we hope to be our biggest event of the summer,” said Marisa Scheinfeld, the head of the Borscht Belt Project. “Hurleyville has a long history - with roots extending back to the earliest days of the Borscht Belt. Yet this rich history is also woven into a contemporary story - with individuals such as Mel Brooks and Jim Henson who spent time in the hamlet - two names that have made an indelible imprint on American popular culture.”

This special event will also feature the legendary Mel Brooks, who started his eventful career at the age of 14 in Hurleyville’s Butler Lodge.

Among the dedication speakers will be author, producer, comedy writer, and original Saturday Night Live writer, Alan Zweibel.

The speakers featured will also include Sullivan County Historian John Conway, Gary Dan from the Morningside and Sha-wan-ga Lodge, among others. Afterwards, attendees will be encouraged to shop the local businesses and stop by “Author Row” at Morgan Outdoors from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

In a true testament to the expo, this is a meticulously curated author and artisan line-up that will feature a selection of authors and artists from the Catskills.

“We’re excited to dig into it all while presenting an art and literary expo to compliment the day’s celebrations,” said Scheinfeld. “We’re calling it “a happening in Hurleyville” and we anticipate it will be happening -  replete with an author row, a slideshow, and special musical performance as we work to forever fuse this rich history of our county.”

The event is also planned to feature a slideshow screening entitled Catskilland: Billboards Of The Borscht Belt. This will be set to a musical backdrop which will be curated by Havurah Arts.

Described as a “fascinating slideshow that will transport people on a literal road trip through the mountains”, it will feature landscapes and billboards dating back from the 1940s through the early 2000s.

At 3:00 p.m., the event will continue at the HPAC with a unique, ticketed performance of Sam Sadigursky’s Solomon Diaries.

A member of the Phillip Glass Ensemble, Sadigursky has released 11 albums and tours with musicians like David Byrne, Bruce Hornsby, and Tom Jones.

Solomon Diaries is a series of three albums which are written by Sadigursky who was inspired by the grandeur of the Borscht Belt.

With the exception of the performance, which requires a ticket, the main event is free and available to everyone.
